The GMB
The Graduates’ Memorial Building, or The GMB, was completed in 1904. It was designed by Sir Thomas Drew, and its neo-Gothic Victorian architecture complements the beautiful surroundings of Trinity College. In December 2000, a fire threatened to burn down the entire building, and it was only due to the heroic efforts of certain students that not all the valuable artifacts and paintings were lost to the blaze. Since then the building has been returned to its former glory, and the Society invites all Trinity students to venture into The GMB and enjoy the facilities it has to offer.
Open 8:30am - 7pm
The Conversation Room – Ground Floor
The Conversation Room is situated on the ground floor of The GMB. This beautiful Edwardian room’s sole purpose is as a recreational space for members of the Society. Complete with a widescreen media centre, large comfortable leather couches, wireless internet and a commanding view of Front Square, The Conversation Room is the perfect place to enjoy lunch with friends, relax between lectures or study. A selection of newspapers is delivered each morning, and every Thursday night the Society hosts a reception here, following its weekly debate in The Chamber.
Open 8:30am – 7pm
The Chamber – Ground Floor
Most of the ground floor of The GMB is given over to Ireland’s most-renowned debating chamber. For over a century, this vast and beautiful room has played host to the events and meetings of the Society, from intellectually-charged debates to the awarding of Honorary Patronages to such illustrious figures as Desmond Tutu, Salman Rushdie, Al Pacino, and John McCain. The Society’s debating tradition continues to this day, with topical motions argued within The Chamber every Thursday evening.
The Council Room – Ground Floor
The Society’s Council room still retains the Edwardian décor it bore 100 years ago. This stunning room’s interior has changed very little since its original construction, with original wood paneling and wooden floorboards, a period fireplace, beautiful antique furniture and access to The Chamber’s balcony. The majority of the planning and organisation of the Society takes place here, and access is restricted to officers, members of council and their guests.
The Snooker Rooms – 3rd Floor
The Snooker Rooms of the Society are available for use during the week. The Society owns the largest snooker rooms in Dublin and runs them at an affordable rate for students. The fee for non-members using the snooker rooms is €8 per hour, while members of the society enjoy a discounted rate of €6.
Open 11am-7pm
The Resource Room – 4th Floor
The Resource Room is one of the only study spaces on campus available outside of the libraries and is ideally located opposite The GMB’s computer room. Before the fire of 2000, the room was used as a private library for society members and contained many of the records of The University Philosophical Society which were tragically lost in the blaze. Now, newly renovated with wireless access, The Resource Room is once again available as a quiet study space for students and displays a selection from the Society’s archives and private library.
If any society is interested in booking the room, please contact the Society’s Librarian through the ‘Contact Us’ section of this website.
Open 8:30 – 7pm
The Computer Room – 4th Floor
One of the quieter computer rooms on Trinity Campus, The GMB computer room is open throughout the day for students. Fully equipped with over thirty computers and a printer, the room is located opposite the Resource Room, making ideal for study.
Open 8:30 – 7pm
