The AIB Phil Speaks Debating Initiative was established during the 320th Session of the University Philosophical Society. The initiative was created to provide a platform through which the secondary school children of Ireland could develop public speaking skills.

Throughout the year, The Phil Speaks Initiative holds a series of workshops, where former and current Trinity students instruct pupils in the art of public speaking. In conjunction with these workshops, competitive rounds are held, where pupils can practice the skills which they have been taught in the workshops. These workshops and competitive rounds take place in Dublin, Cork, Galway, and Belfast. The competitions grand final takes place in The Chamber of The GMB in Dublin towards the end of the year, with prizes being awarded to all finalists and a grand prize being awarded to the winner.

Phil Speaks is overseen and organised by the Societies Schools’ Convenor and the Deputy Schools’ Convenors, with the assistance of the Council of the University Philosophical Society and other volunteers. The Phil Speaks Team always rejoices in seeing familiar faces taking part in the workshops and competitive rounds, but is just as thrilled by the new faces it has seen taking part in recent times.

Any schools looking for further information about the Initiative, need only contact the School Convenor, through the ‘Contact Us’ section of this website. Similarly, if you are a Trinity student who wishes to assist in the organisation of the competition, please get in contact as we are always delighted to have new people involved.
