Thursday night chamber debates are a cornerstone of the Phil’s schedule, bringing in hundreds of students each week to enjoy fresh discourse. For hundreds of years, we have hosted debates on a huge range of topics, from current affairs and grand philosophical ideas to pop culture and comedy.
The debates are a fantastic way to see guest speakers who are experts in their field discussing the topics that matter to them – speakers in recent years have included Finance Minister Paschal Donohue (a former Phil Secretary!), Labour leaders Ivana Bacik, and Tiktoker Isaac H.P!
These debates are a can’t-miss event in the Trinity social calendar, and our members line up each week to hear fiery, passionate speeches, as well as to mingle with speakers at the post-debate wine reception. Thursday nights often find the debating chamber full to capacity with interested students, and we have recently made Phil history with the highest number of audience members ever recorded!
