The Bram Stoker Club (‘The Bram’ in Phil-lingo) is a sub-committee of the University

Philosophical Society (‘the Phil’) in Trinity College Dublin. The Bram Stoker Club is a paper-

reading sub-committee, named after a once-President of the Society, the beloved Bram Stoker.

Our sub-committee is fuelled by personal passions. The Bram Stoker tackles ‘discourse’ from a

different angle, encouraging members to write academic-style papers on topics of their own

personal fascination. The Club is a space fueled by exploration; provoking discourse on topics

that members may otherwise never confront in such depth. Themes range widely because of

the member-led approach, truly everything and anything has been discussed in the Bram Stoker

Club; from etymology, to feminist literature, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and funding in

metaphysics. Following paper-readings the Bram Stoker Club encourages discourse and debate

on the topics. Discussions on academic themes like these can seem intimidating, especially for

newcomers to the Bram Stoker Club, which is why the paper-readings are crucially in a laid-

back, casual format, which promotes accessibility and encourages attendance. (We find the

complimentary tea, coffee and biscuit selection also helps!)

Come to the Bram to broaden your mind; to escape your degree, or, (instead), delve really

obsessively into a ferocious niche of your degree; anything goes.

Find us @bramstokerclub on Instagram, where we will keep you posted on upcoming paper

readings.

The Bram Stoker Club also hosts a podcast, called ‘Bramcast’. Bramcast provides yet another

avenue for member-led personal education, and space for discourse. It will be hosted this year

by two committee members of the Bram Stoker Club: Gavin and Lily. Some of Bramcast’s past

guests have included:

  •  Ed Moloney (expert journalist on The Troubles);

  •  Alan Esslemont (Director General of TG4) and;

  • Dr. Anna Lembke (dopamine specialist and Chief of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Dual Diagnosis Clinic at Stanford University.)
